April 18 – Things that will make me instantly want to read a book
–Be sure to check out http://www.brokeandbookish.com for upcoming and previous Top Ten Tuesdays!-
In no particular order:
- The cover …
- And the title. Sometimes that’s all it takes you guys.
- I’m a sucker for books about ballerinas. I loved the show Bunheads, and was super upset that there’s only one season. I also love Dance Academy which is an Australian show on Netflix. It was really good. I love Dance Moms. Do you see a trend?
- I’m a sucker for books that have a character with anxiety or depression. Or that involves self-harm. For the longest time I never understood why I did it. So reading about it, kind of helped me understand. But I still can’t tell you why I self-harmed for years. Books haven’t been able to explain it too me either. But I like to try.
- Fairy tale Retellings. Simple.
- If certain BookTubers talk about it, with such love, I instantly want to look into that book and see what I think.
- If the main character’s name is Jessica. This never happens. I just want to read about what I would do. lol.
- Royalty. Reading about the different types of royalty that fantasy books have, appeal to me so much.
That’s all I can think of. Sorry guys!
Thanks for Reading!

Self-harm is control. You control the pain you inflict upon yourself, no one else does. <– at least that's what it felt like to me. I'm glad you no longer self-harm!
I'm a sucker for a good cover myself 🙂 And sometimes a cheesy title will put me straight in my happy spot. Our Ten Things that Get us in the Mood (to read).

If the title and the book go together really well, it instantly makes it onto my TBR also.
Lol. 🙂

I wish I would have added cover and title to my list! Those things, along with the blurb, are what initially attract me to a book. I can’t believe I forgot them! Great list!

No apologies. Your list is your list. I wish there had been more books about teens with depression or self-harm tendencies when I was younger and needed to feel less alone. Happy reading.

I wish that same thing too.
It’s upsetting how long it’s taken to get some diversity in YA reads.

I loved dance moms! So many people have put royalty. I completely forgot to put that on my list but it’s true!

Yes! I just love books with ballet involved. It’s such a specific thing. Lol.
I also forgot to put things on my list like enemies to lovers romances, good world building, things like that.
I usually always want to re-write my post after I read everyone else’s!

A nice cover is always a plus. I don’t think books on self-harm/mental illness will EVER truly explain why a person hurts theirself or how to properly cope, but I’m with you on that. They’re just intriguing and as corny as it sounds, makes me feel less alone even if it’s fiction.

YES. That’s always one of the things that I want from a book. Is to feel less alone.
I should’ve added that as one of my ten. Lol.

A good list! Have you read: Written in Red? Not sure you’d like it but the author used self harm in a fascinating way! You might like it for that reason. I was going to use it for one of my fictional jobs but then felt it may be offensive to those that self harm (as a job…) anyway that was the thought that came into my head from reading your post, lol… a good solid list that I agree with many…I didn’t think of royalty though… a good one!
